Meenakshi temple is one of the largest temple complex in India.It was constructed during the nayak period between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, but center part is very much older.This temple is dedecated to goddess meenakshi and sundereshwarar.The orignel temple was build by kulasekara panday,but the entire credit for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the naykas. The nayakas rules in madeurai from 16ht to 18th century and and left majestic imprint of there rule in meenakshi – sundereshwarar temple.

The temple complex is with in a high walled enclosure at the care of which are the two sanctums of meenakshi and sundarashwarar,surrounded by a number of smaller shrines and grand pillared hall, especially impressne are the 12 gopuras(pyramidal gatwes).
